Strike It Strong created a division called the “Step Up Fund” in memory of Cheryl’s sister Marilyn Squadrito Bonner, with the mission to help women get out of a bad situation. Theresa Santore from the Center for Family Services wrote us a beautiful letter after experiencing the Step Up Fund in action:
After leaving a domestic violence relationship, a mother and her son were working to rebuild their lives but were on the verge of homelessness as their temporary housing options came to an end. At an already overwhelming time, the uncertainty of where they would be living was adding even more trauma to their healing journey.
With timely support from the Strike It Strong Step Up Fund and Stike It Strong’s Board of Directors, the family received assistance with a security deposit and first month’s rent, allowing them to move into a safe, stable home instead of entering a shelter. Once housing was secured, additional support helped transform the space into a place they could truly call home. The family received essential household items, including beds, linens, a refrigerator and microwave, along with toiletries and other basic necessities, ensuring they had the resources needed to meet their immediate daily needs.
Having a safe and functional home gave the mother the stability she needed to prepare for a new full-time job and continue working toward financial independence. For her son, it provided the comfort, routine, and sense of security that are so important for healing after experiencing domestic violence. Rather than worrying about where they would sleep or how they would meet their basic needs, the family was able to focus on rebuilding their lives with hope and confidence.
This support did more than prevent homelessness—it provided safety, dignity, and a fresh start. By addressing both housing and essential household needs, the family was able to move from crisis toward stability with a stronger foundation for long-term success.
